Doug Porter is truly a kind and compassionate man with a genuine interest in every child's welfare and self esteem. "He is not one of those coaches that wants to win at all costs, but he honestly cares about the kinds he coaches" said one parent at the Hickman Grammar Schoool.
That is why the news came as no surprise to us that the nine fellow High School coaches voted Doug as "High School Wrestling Coach of the Year." He received the award at the Trans-Valley League Tourney finals.
Doug wrestled at Hughson High and then at MJC and Cal State Bakersfield as an assistant coach two years prior to being hired at Stanislaus State where he organized a wrestling program. While coaching there for three years he was named "NCAA Rookie Coach of the Year"
He and his family moved to Hickman when his boys, Kyle and Aaron were attending Hickman school. Doug began a wrestling club and coached Hickman Students for six years. When the family relocated to Manteca, he helped coach wrestling and football at East Union High in Manteca.
When he returned to Hickman he took the Hughson High wrestling coach position at a challenging time for the Hughson program. There were problems that prior year and there was a lot of rebuilding to do. But did they ever rebuild!
The Hughson team this year was undefeated in dual meets - the record 8-0! They received a first place at the Tri-Valley League Tourney and a first place at the Escalon Tourney. Hughson also won the Sac_Joaquin Section Championships, which was the most difficult task of all this year. And it is no wonder they were successful because of the excellent leadership and guidance the Hughson kids received from a truly fine and outstanding coach, Doug Porter
